About

I grew up in Transylvania, Romania, then fled at the age of 13 to Aachen in West Germany, where I studied German literature and mathematics after graduating from high school. Since 2001 I have been living as a photo artist in Berlin.

Statement

Man as an individual, his relationships, his role in social networks and his fragility are the themes that drive my work. Questioning the individual leads to subconsciously given answers that tell me something about society and about me. The aim of my work is to find images for feelings such as greed, fear, love or for the bewitching disorder of life that carry this energy within themselves and reflect the medium of photography.

Loredana Nemes | beyond (2008 - 2010)

Loredana Nemes | beyond (2008 - 2010)

Underway in nocturnal Berlin, Loredana Nemes, who lives in this city, approaches men’s worlds in Turkish, Oriental, and Arab cafés in Kreuzberg, Neukölln, and Wedding. Her clearly composed photographs depict the architectural exteriors of these mysterious places as wondrous light-boxes; along with these, portraits of the coffeehouse guests—astonishing close-ups of men’s faces—materialize in a powerfully expressive, hazy vision. Whereas the photographer is required to remain outside with her Linhof plate camera, her subjects pose behind the privacy ensured by the opaque glass and curtains characteristic of these institutions. The images that result from these dialogues reveal frontiers—both on a cultural and a visual level.

Loredana Nemes | Blossom Time (2012)

Loredana Nemes | Blossom Time (2012)

In her series „Blossom Time“ Loredana Nemes‘ subject matter is again the portrait. On the streets of Ludwigsburg she talked to teenagers and made portraits of them in their urban surroundings. The artist portrayed the groups of teenagers, yet by making each portrait individually. Dyptichs, tryptichs or quartets are thus formed. These are much more than the sum of their single components. They visualize time and in the transition of the single portraits discrepancies and disruptions arise. The artist offers multiple forms of reading. The faces Nemes confronts the viewer with are unfashionable beautiful, authentic and delicate. This tenderness finds its equivalent in blossoming trees of which the artist takes photographs in the same fragmentary way as of the teenagers. „Blossom Time“ therefore concentrates on forms of blossoming time, both for humans and nature.

Loredana Nemes | Pinstripe (2015 - 2016)

Loredana Nemes | Pinstripe (2015 - 2016)

In "Pinstripes" Loredana Nemes devotes herself to the bankers. Bankers are powerful, they make decisions that influence the world and they are, mostly in higher positions, men throughout. As a starting point, Nemes chooses the bankers' professional uniform, the suit. She is interested in its crumpling, the traces of the individual, of the human, which the banking business seeks to conceal. With her staging, Nemes turns this garment of power into a sculpture and the inside of the portrayed person into the outside. This is a game with images that raise and irritate questions, suspend genders and demand a new way of looking at things.

Loredana Nemes | Greed (2014 - 2017)

Loredana Nemes | Greed (2014 - 2017)

And then „Greed“. Thirteen pictures arranged like a score: what music do we hear? Without photography our eye cannot register what we see in these pictures: the secrets of impatience, greed, and passion. The gulls are huge, almost as big as people. The viewer bears witness to physical metamorphoses. The gulls seem now to be made of fragile porcelain, now of perforated folded paper. One moment the fragility is as hard as stone, then the hardness turns fragile, as in real life. The gulls fade and melt, dissolve and disappear into each other. Is this destruction? Salvation? Birth? It appears brutal and erotic at once. (Katja Petrowskaja)
