About

As a teenager I started to be interested in photography and until today I ask myself how this medium works. During my studies in Kiel and Paris I got to know a broad spectrum of artistic forms of expression and concepts and increasingly integrated theoretical aspects into my photographic work.

Statement

In my work I am exploring photography as a medium, focusing on issues such as time, duration, representation and identity. I am particularly interested in how psychological, philosophical and technical aspects of photography intertwine. I generally work in the form of clearly defined series in which I use traditional photographic means such as long exposures or photographed projections. In thematic terms, portraits repeatedly play a central role. I try, often starting from a very personal approach, to negotiate general questions about the ways in which images work.

Katrin Jaquet | (m)other (1998)

In the series (m)other I work with projections: in three different chapters I project an image of my mother or my grandmother onto my face, I take the position of different positions in projections of childhood images, or I project childhood memories into my throat.

Katrin Jaquet | dioptrics (2008-2013)

At the beginning of this series was my fascination for the historical picture of a blindfolded man, which I came across in the book "Techniques oft he Observer" by Jonathan Crary. Originally, this is an image from the essay "La Dioptrique", in which René Descartes deals with the refraction of light. Based on the illustrations of this book I created about 80 photographic and graphic interpretations. These are shown as prints, but also as a cross-fade slide show.

It's important to me to physically experience how an image is created. In this series, I walk through the streets with my hands holding my camera. Within an exposure time of about twelve steps, buildings, trees and architectural details are transformed into abstract color spaces.

Katrin Jaquet | neg (2019-21)

Katrin Jaquet | neg (2019-21)

The series "neg" is about family photography. Starting from a very personal approach, I try to approach general issues. When my mother died a few years ago, I took over all the family photos. There are chronologically arranged albums, but also boxes full of unsorted pictures from five generations. What is missing are the negatives. The old negatives ended up in the trash years ago, and there were never any negatives of the newer pictures of my own family, only files. I'm interested in the idea of the negative as a potential - technically, aesthetically, and psychologically. So I produce the negatives digitally. I overlay them with positives, combining similar motifs from different generations. In doing so, I look for the point where positive and negative melt into something new that corresponds to my inner, contradictory image and at the same time goes beyond it.
