About

Through my actions with photography I bring them into space and in connection with movement or time. They are attempts at communication. Since 2001 my works have been presented at home and abroad.

Statement

A longing for something like a core of things drives me in my work. It begins with the fascination of surfaces: House facades, scenery, floor, water, fabric, fur, skin, faces, bodies, mushrooms... Something hides behind the things, in them. I photograph or film them piece by piece, as if I were scanning them with the camera. These pictures are again like mushrooms for me - or foreign planets. I examine them and subject them to further actions, e.g. skinning, ironing, coating, editing in the video editing program, transferring them into three-dimensions, disassembling, reassembling, scratching. It is physical, even to the point of penetration. The material is my bridge. Thereby I want to produce and touch something inner. At the same time, I keep my distance, because despite the immediacy of these processes, they are abstract. The camera is my proximity-distance-regulator to the world - to things, people, situations - and the interventions in images represent my way of dealing with them: curious, violent, timid, lustful, listening, helpless, desperate, impatient, gentle. The pictures become mirrors. My perception changes. Photo objects, videos and installations are created, spaces that are often accessible. They are connected with each other like mushrooms through an underground mycelium. They are attempts at communication. Those who enter can become part of it, lose orientation, be alienated, provoked, surprised.

Eva Schmeckenbecher | LOST (2018)

Eva Schmeckenbecher | LOST (2018)

2018 HD video, 8:22 min In this work an ID card is the subject of investigation. By being literally reflected with a mirror the face of the person is deformed constantly and sometimes changes into a picture puzzle. A person dissolves into patterns of himself. The function of the photo as a proof of identity is broken by video cuts, duplications, repetitions, size changes, overlays and by increasing the sound. What identity constitutes beyond national affiliation stays an open question.

Eva Schmeckenbecher | The Wall (2017)

Eva Schmeckenbecher | The Wall (2017)

2017 Installation, HD video, 7:42 min A wall is an architectural construction and a metaphor for border and protection. The work "The Wall" consists of individual sequences in which photographies of pieces of wall are the object of simple, physical actions. They are processes of investigation and penetration. Touching, scanning, dissecting, skinning, tearing, crumpling photos also changes the bricks on the image stage. The motif, image and material are transferred into the three-dimensional or sculptural field - and through sounds into the temporal dimension. The photographed masonry is present in a new way. The medium of photography becomes an open white surface, rough and empty, and a light, flexible object with wrinkles, cracks and light reflections.

Eva Schmeckenbecher | Edgar (2014)

Eva Schmeckenbecher | Edgar (2014)

2014, HD video, 11:42 min. The camera shows a stack of revised photocopies with a portrait of a man. From different directions a hand takes picture after picture, sometimes carefully and tenderly, sometimes roughly. Every kind of revision and every gesture of the hand represents a possible attitude towards the photo or towards the depicted person.

Eva Schmeckenbecher | Trigger (2018/19)

Eva Schmeckenbecher | Trigger (2018/19)

2018/19 Installation: photos, 7 videos, shirt, mirror film Music: Héctor Moro „Trigger“ is the reflection of two parallel, different worlds: the surface of images of the everyday world and the behind, the inside, the imagined, the vague. "Trigger" shows an abundance of perspectives at the same time and makes new spaces imaginable. The installation was shown in May / June 2018 in the Kiosk hr.fleischer e.V. in Halle (Saale) and in January 2019, as part of the Stuttgart Film Winter, in a new version adapted to the spatial situation in the Gedok Galerie Stuttgart.
