About

As an artist I work with the media photography, performance and video. Physical vision, the communicative quality of encounting and the aesthetics of the process are essential themes of my work. I am a freelance photographer, give workshops in which I examine artistic strategies, especially in dealing with photography, and am curatorially active in an exhibition and artist collective.

Statement

I conceive the photographic as performative approaching and thus not solely restricted to the outcome of a material image. Diving into social structures and spaces, into private life and relations is for me the starting point for re/producing communication with the means of analogue colour photography. Along with this goes no longer the question “What do I disclose?” but “How do I make use of and show photography”? Touching, confronting, dealing with, sensing, longing for, and repeating are ways of agency for me to not only producing but imagining photographic images. Acting on and with bodies happens through the photographic apparatus with others, sharing and handing it over,¬ as well as by oneself in the darkroom. For I do not understand the photographic images as a singular expression of meaning, but as something which expresses its potential for communication through its material, the traces of its coming-into-being which enters into relations with other images. My installations thus aim at intensifying these communicative traits and at opening them up towards the beholders in a physical manner in which gazes demand movements. It is the belief in the impossibility of photography to create and show something definitive which forms the basis of my artistic agency and is thought of as a potentiality. Every act thus follows the intention of a coming-closer, of an interacting with the means of analogue photography both in the photographic act as well as in the presentation of images.

Alex Heide | Floor Pieces (2014 - 2019)

Alex Heide | Floor Pieces (2014 - 2019)

'floor piece' is a performative format in a two-step. It only emerges in an exhibition space as it is neatly adjusted to the contours of a floor. The analogue handprint thus becomes a representative of the spatial conditions and the movements of the beholders within this space. As their perspective and perception to the photographic images and its way of showing changes, so does the print itself change which becomes once more the keeper of traces. The print could thus be conceived as double space- and time-based. Once an exhibition has ended, a floor piece leaves its initial context it is brought back into a conventional mode of showing and installed hanging on a wall. If not before, it is then that the joint creation of the image by the photographer and the walking beholders comes to its full meaning which always also includes the content of the chosen motive which is decided with this format in mind.

Alex Heide | Refugium (2018)

Alex Heide | Refugium (2018)

'Refugium' deals with the state of freedom as utopia. In addition to legal, political or social preconditions, freedom is always also a "place" of fantasy, just as "home" is something that can be generated through creation and memory. The field of tension between "locating" and "dislocating", feeling of belonging and self-determination, dissolving and being completely in the here and now opens up. Freedom becomes escaping and searching, isolation and integration, ecstasy and experiment. The removed and exposed photographic colour emulsions open the fixed surface, making it permanently sensitive and receptive. The observing gaze penetrates into unseen layers in which photographic grain, photochemical traces of color and the gaze of the exposing hand meet and condense. Photographic image information becomes color gradients of a new action frame and image space.

Alex Heide | Kissing (2010)

Alex Heide | Kissing (2010)

… going to kiss as many people as possible. I ask people if they want to kiss me. On my mouth. We kiss. It does not matter who my partner is. In this moment. I try to adopt it. We try it. It becomes timeless. It is about getting to know the other person. To find them. Or to resign. The decision is made during the act of kissing. How we kiss. It gets a meaning. When do I get to the person, the human? Video, 7:07 min. Performance with a mini-HD camera being held in the hand during the act of kissing. I hold it, kissing, one take, my partner holds it, kissing, the other take. Interaction and emotion direct the camera, decided and undecided, controlled and uncontrolled. One encounter follows on the other.
