Alex Heide | Refugium (2018)
'Refugium' deals with the state of freedom as utopia. In addition to legal, political or social preconditions, freedom is always also a "place" of fantasy, just as "home" is something that can be generated through creation and memory. The field of tension between "locating" and "dislocating", feeling of belonging and self-determination, dissolving and being completely in the here and now opens up. Freedom becomes escaping and searching, isolation and integration, ecstasy and experiment.
The removed and exposed photographic colour emulsions open the fixed surface, making it permanently sensitive and receptive. The observing gaze penetrates into unseen layers in which photographic grain, photochemical traces of color and the gaze of the exposing hand meet and condense. Photographic image information becomes color gradients of a new action frame and image space.
