The lecture offers an introduction to the history and methodology of documentary photography and places the work of Roland Bauer within an art-historical context. Bauer’s photographs combine precise observation with a keen interest in social and cultural history and are rooted in a humanistic, objective photographic tradition. Using selected works, the lecture explores how his photography bridges strong regional ties with an international context.

Prof. Dr. Claude W. Sui studied painting, art history and philosophy in Mainz and Frankfurt am Main. Since the 1990s, he has worked as a researcher, exhibition curator and curator specializing in the history of photography, from early nineteenth-century photography to twentieth-century German photography. He was for many years director of the Forum Internationale Photographie at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim.

To mark the end of the exhibition, we warmly invite you to an evening celebrating the photographic life and work of Roland Bauer (1950–2026).

Over a drink and in a relaxed atmosphere, the evening offers an opportunity for informal exchange and conversation about his diverse body of work, his long-standing connection with the Hohenlohe region, and the stories behind his photographs.

Short guided tours will be offered throughout the evening, and the museum will remain open until 9 pm on this evening.

No booking is required.
