About

I am Korean and studied sculpture in Korea. I wanted to change my life, therefore I moved 24 years old to Germany. I studied fine arts in Hamburg and Düsseldorf, since then I find myself between the cultures.

Statement

As a fine artist, I work with photography and embroidery. I create new worlds through stitching on the photography with needle and thread. An important part of my work is to combine and connect different views and perspectives. I create new realities through photo collages. But not by composing and editing pictures on the computer, but by hand sewing the individual picture elements together. With the help of yarn, I connect the picture elements to form a new reality. However, through the embroidery I not only connect pictures, but "draw" with needle and thread completely new motifs and elements, which harmonize with the. Images and complete them. This leads the picture in different levels and structures. The different threads are sometimes clear and can be seen at first glance. Sometimes they are hidden and less noticeable. The visible reality of photography coincides with my imagination and the real motif of the photographs is continued in the space of the imagination.

Gisoo Kim | Dreaming (2012 - 2019)

My photo works seem to be real and at the same time surreal. By stitching and cutting photography they get further expressive elements. Some photo works show altered landscapes. Like in a dream different aspects come together to a new melange of realities.

Gisoo Kim | Diary (2010 - 2019)

Gisoo Kim | Diary (2010 - 2019)

I write a diary by using photos. Two photos create a new one. Two places complement and influence each other positively and connect to a strange and new place. Through that, I create spaces and situations that would have never existed in reality. So I create kind of a second reality.

Gisoo Kim | Objects (2015 - 2018)

Gisoo Kim | Objects (2015 - 2018)

The individual photos are stitched together to make clothes or objects. On the photos can be found nature and pictures of the city. Some of the dresses only show the back of the photos. With my work, I would like to focus on nature, sustainability and the coexistence of people. I give the clothes an identity that arises from several points of view and connects them together. By connecting places that obviously do not belong together, new realities emerge.

Gisoo Kim | lines (2015 - 2019)

Gisoo Kim | lines (2015 - 2019)

I create photo collages together with landscape photos. I draw with white straight lines, black lines or coloured lines, points and holes with thread and needle. By stitching and cutting the photographies I connected them to a new one. Like in a dream different aspects come together to a new surreal connection and composition.
