About

As a photographer I am engaged in my artistic work predominantly with "light pictures" out of the darkness. In addition, I have been working regularly as a university lecturer since 2013.

Statement

My work is about photographic images that emerge from darkness and disappear partly into it again. Fractions of things appear detached from their surroundings and stand isolated in a great dark area. But the things that can be recognized as fragments at least are withdrawn from you again. Possibilities of reference and categorizing are missing.  The result is a contradictory impression. On the one hand the darkness causes a certain boundlessness; on the other hand it shuts off spaces completely. Space and time can no longer be registered. This creates a field of tension between the illusion of three-dimensionality and surface, between representationalism and abstraction, between documentary realism and fiction. Like chains of association, my photographs are linked together. There is an unfolding of life situations, night scenes, emotional spaces. They frequently have a narrative character, but barred from spatial, temporal and, as regards content, continuity. No legibility in a chronological sense is given. Rather there appear breaks that evoke questions and demand reaction on the side of the observer. The things which are just visible serve only to trigger off something that exists beyond reproduction but means the essential. The images can thus only disclose themselves to the observer himself. They must be completed by the power of his imagination.
