About

I experienced my childhood and youth in Düsseldorf. I studied photography at the University GHS Essen (Folkwang), graduating in communication design in 1990. I apply photography as an artistic medium to explore and describe reality on the basis of my personal experience.

Statement

My work is connected to the question of the individuality of a human being. It explores the relationship between the individual presenting his / her personality and the society to which he / she presents it. My photography primarily intends to translate an individual impulse on life into images. Working with photography's ability to document, I transform views and impressions which I perceive into single photographs that aim to reflect on universal human experiences through a sequenced accumulation. The significance of each image is the result of a long-term working process. During these periods of intensive artistic research and reflection I make myself sensitive to the atmosphere characteristic of each subject.

Andreas Weinand | Colossal Youth (1988 - 1990)

"Melanie, Öhner, Stiffel, Limbo, Anna and her friends are young and live in Essen when Andreas Weinand spends much time with them and takes pictures from 1988 to 1990. While the first episode of the “Simpsons” is broadcasted in the USA, Florence Griffith-Joyner wins three Olympic gold medals in Seoul, the Berlin Wall falls and Tim Berners-Lee invents the World Wide Web, the storm of youth rages within the clique, going full blast. The emotional dizziness in the cosmos of invincibility, love, sex, drugs, alcohol, refusal, crash and resignation is always greater than the world out there. " Hannes Wanderer // Peperoni Books

Andreas Weinand | The Good Earth (1998 - 2006)

"The richest times of our lives were working our land." It was the summer of 1998. We were taking a walk and went down a path unknown to us. Inbetween a paddock and houses. The trail turned into a path of desire. We found ourselves looking at a greenhouse with a bench under its glass roof. This place was wonderful! In front of us a pasture with grazing sheep, behind us the greenhouse with lots of tomatoes and next to it a garden. We sat down on the bench in order to enjoy the beautiful atmosphere. After a while, a car slowly rolled down the hill. Two seniors stepped out. He opened the garden gate, she joined us and started talking.

Andreas Weinand | Stadt Land Mensch // Approaching the Städteregion Aachen (2008)

Andreas Weinand | Stadt Land Mensch // Approaching the Städteregion Aachen (2008)

Approaching the Städteregion Aachen 18 days / 1400 kilometers by car / 113 films – 10 exposures each. (…) I set foot on uncharted land. I have in mind my photographic conception and my experience of life, knowing well that they will respond with flexibility to the demands of reality. That makes me feel sure. I aim to approach people and places with an open mind, to get involved with them without prejudice but with subjectivity. When I take photographs, I take up a point of view -- emotional, content-related, artistic. I make decisions. How do I see that? What is my position? These decisions successively influence the openness of my mind and help to configure my individual point of view. They direct the perspective of my perception. (…)
